Osteoporosis, also known as adult bone loss, is a disease of older people in which the bone becomes porous and brittle ( “osteo” means bones; “poros” means porous). The minerals , specially the calcium of the bones can be borrowed and returned to the skeleton as needed. Osteoporosis appears when the calcium withdrawal from bones is bigger than calcium deposit, therefore the bones start becoming porous. This slow and constant process generally begins in the human body at the age of 50 years old approximately, and is more prevalenti n women than in men. Very often is unnoticeable untill a bone fracture occurs.
If one or more of the following descriptions apply to you, you are in the running for the osteoporosis label:
- A person with petite and/or thin body size.
- A person with a sedentary lifestyle.
- A woman who has never given birth.
- A smoker or heavy drinker.
- A descendant of someone who has lost height or fractured a bone in later life.
- A long term user of drugs that interfere with calcium metabolism ( such as anticonvulsivants, heparin, cortisone, and isoniazid).
- A person with lactose-intolerance or lifelong low intake of calcium.
There is evidence that smoking increases the risk of osteoporosis, as well as the excess of coffee and alcohol. Physical exercise can avoid the bone loss, but it should be bend exercise which stimulates the calcium deposit in the skeleton (tennis, walking, etc.).
Recommended Dietary Supplements to prevent and to treat osteoporosis:
- Calcium: 500-1000 mg/day.
- Magnesium: 250-500 mg/day
- Vitaminic Complex B.
- Vitamin D: it is very important because has an essential role in the absorption of calcium.
